Terms and conditions
We kindly ask you to carefully read the following points.
1 GENERAL
Can Lis was Jørn Utzon’s home on Mallorca. The house is now owned and managed by The Utzon Foundation.
Can Lis is a serene and unique building – and from an architectonical point of view, a very
consistent and strict house. The house is very well known internationally.
Can Lis invites the visitor to contemplate. Even a short visit makes an impression, but only staying in the house provides the full experience.
The Utzon Foundation wants to open the house to as many people as possible but is also committed to make the use of the house as sensible as possible, in order for the house to remain as authentic and original as possible – both now and in the future. The foundation therefore expects all residents and visitors to do their utmost to maintain and preserve the house.
The upkeep and safeguarding of Can Lis is all-important to The Utzon Foundation. Along with the administration of the house, this puts a heavy financial burden on foundation which is why the foundation has applied a very strict cancellation and refund policy.
We therefore ask you to carefully study these house rules and guidelines prior to the visit and follow them during your stay. The house rules also provide a practical guideline.
Those who stay in the house are expected to make every effort to look after the house to the best of their abilities.
Any visit to the house is at your own risk.
You and your visitors are responsible for any occurrence during the stay.
The visit/stay can in no way be used for commercial purposes.

5. ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
Arrival Friday after 18:00, depart the next Friday no later than 10:00.
GENERAL
The house is located at the top of a steep cliff – 20 metres above the sea – and we strongly dissuade visitors from bringing smaller children to the house.
The house is built without any specific consideration to the changing climate and, thus, it can be quite cold during the winter period. However, there are heaters and a fireplace, and the house is inhabitable as such all year round.
The house is located on the outskirts of the small, rural village of Porto Petro. It is therefore difficult to get any specialized item (i.e. medicine, drawing materials etc.). However, Palma (55 kilometres away) is a modern city with access to most facilities.
Due to the island's high temperatures and dry periods, it is expected and very important that the guest will stay informed about periods of fire bans. High risk season is typical May 1st – October 15th, but can change from year to year. Please stay informed.
UPON ARRIVAL
The house is about an hour’s drive from the airport and you must arrange and provide your own means of transport during your stay.
It is possible to order a taxi from the airport – it is approximately €80-90.
All major car rental companies have an office at the airport.
It is possible to use public transport, but services are quite irregular.
Porto Petro has a few mini markets and several restaurants, but they are a little more than walking distance. In winter opening hours are reduced and many restaurants are closed
DEPARTURE
The house must be left with all items placed as they were on arrival.
All foodstuff must be thrown out (except things that can keep for longer periods).
All linen and towels etc. must be placed in the washing basket.
All broken or lost items must be reported at the latest upon departure. Extra glasses can be found in the dining room cabinet.
The house must be locked and the alarm set
The key must put back in the key deposit box where it was retrieved on arrival
An inspection will be done prior to the next visit to ensure everything is in order
Meridiano will clean after each stay
AFTER YOUR VISIT (residencies only!)
A (max) one-page informal and personal account of your visit must be written and sent to The Utzon Foundation. The text may be published on the web site.
The page must be forwarded to the Utzon Foundation, info@canlis.dk no later than 14 days after the end of the stay.
5. DURING THE STAY
Please be extremely careful in relation to the sandstone floors and walls as they are very sensitive to discolouring. The sandstone is called Marais or Santanyi and was quarried locally.
For the same reason, it is not permitted to drink red wine or any coloured drinks on the premises.
If residents have allowed party-like activities to take place or other types of activities which seriously increases the risk of making permanent damage to the house, the Utzon Foundation reserves the right to immediately evict the resident(s) from the premises.
Cleaning agents: The house is very sensitive to chemicals and generally it is not necessary to clean beyond for your own needs, such as sweeping, and cleaning of sinks, toilets etc. where normal agents can be used. The house is cleaned professionally once a week.
In the house, you will find:
Linen, duvets, pillows, towels for up to 6 people.
A reasonably equipped kitchen, with most basic equipment.
Washing machine, basket and drying rack
Modem for broadband
Two large single beds (120cm) as well as a couple of folding beds.
In the house you will not find
Computer
TV or DVD
Dishwasher
The house is equipped with an ALARM system but is relatively open and accessible. We suggest that you do not bring unnecessary valuables, as there is a considerable risk of theft or break-in. If you leave the house for a longer period, we advise you to bring valuables.
It is generally recommended that you are very careful about leaving doors and windows open in one part of the house if you are in another part. People have been burglarised while in the house.
During your stay, we recommend you to switch on the alarm every time you leave the house. Likewise, you are expected to lock all windows/shutters and doors, and as there is four freestanding houses, it is a lot of doors and windows. As there is no land-line, the alarm is a stand alone solution and not hooked up to a central alarm unit.
Generally, the reception of signals at Can Lis is poor and you will have to move around to find a good position for the broadband. There are several café’s in Porto Petro where reception is fine.
Visiting Can Lis is very popular and the house attracts a lot of attention from all over the world. Generally, there is no obligation to receive any visitors during your stay unless it has been agreed in advance with the Foundation. You are free to politely refuse anyone who might pass by or if you decide to invite smaller groups inside make sure to escort them around the house.
We would like to emphasize that the house's open structure and explicit orientation also necessarily entail accessibility from external parties. Between the house and the sea (on the other side of the low wall) the public is allowed to walk by, and please be aware that this will happen from time to time.
Residencies: The house furthest back is the studio, where you will be able to work and keep your things permanently during the residency. The house is not very tolerant in terms of what type of paints, liquids or other solutions you can use. You are therefore only expected to use materials without any risk of impact.
If you want to use other more risky materials it is possible to arrange a special floor and wall covering, but this has to be arranged prior to the visit and at your cost.
There is a book cabinet, with books, some of which has belonged to Jørn Utzon. These can be used during your stay, but obviously must remain in the house.
If you should wish to supplement the book collection, perhaps with a work resulting from the residency, the Utzon Foundation will make sure the work is added to the collection with the proper acknowledgment of the donor.
The fireplace may be used – the wood will be supplemented by our caretaker.
Swimming from the cliffs is very dangerous but there are nice beaches nearby.
